Enthusiasm of Young Dr. Arsenkov Brings AI to Macedonian Healthcare

by | Apr 10, 2024 | Case Study

Dr. Stefan Arsenkov is a young surgeon at the University Clinic “St. Naum Ohridski” who uses artificial intelligence (AI) for preoperative planning.

AI helps shorten his work that used to take 10 hours down to 2-3 hours by generating 3D models of patient organs from medical scans.

These 3D models allow for more precise and effective surgeries by visualizing the patient’s individual anatomy beforehand.

While AI develops rapidly, it is far from perfect, so Dr. Arsenkov’s task is to “catch” any errors made by the AI models.

He is not worried about his position being replaced, as he saw AI’s potential early on. Macedonian healthcare lags behind the West in adopting AI, only using it thanks to Dr. Arsenkov’s enthusiasm.

The 3D models serve a dual purpose – they can also be used by medical students to closely examine real cases of health issues.

AI development is still in a “gray area” globally, driven by American tech giants in the West, Chinese state-controlled companies in the East, and the EU positioning itself as a leader in ethical AI development.
